The minimalist carry guide for summer

Summer travel has a way of making people pack more than they need. Longer trips, warmer destinations, more activities - the logic of 'just in case' gets louder. But the best summer trips are almost always the ones where you moved light and had room to bring things back.

The core principle

Minimalist travel isn't a challenge or an extreme sport. It's just being honest about what you actually use versus what you pack because it feels responsible to have it. Once you've done a trip at 80% of your usual kit, you'll struggle to go back.

Build around three bottoms

Most summer packing problems start with clothes. The fix is simple: choose two or three bottoms that work across multiple contexts - a pair of shorts that goes from the beach to a casual dinner, a light pant that handles everything else. From there, tops become easy.

Compress what you bring

Packing Cubes do two things: they compress your clothes into a fraction of the space, and they eliminate the scramble of finding something at the bottom of your bag. Organized by type, you always know where things are - even when you're pulling from a bag at 6am.

The toiletry rule

Toiletries are where most people overpack without realizing it. Bring travel-size versions of what you actually use daily, plus sunscreen. Everything else you can buy at your destination if you really need it. Keep it all in a Toiletry Bag so it moves in and out of your carry without becoming a project.

What your wallet should do in summer

Summer often means more casual movement - beaches, markets, outdoor events. A slim wallet with one card, some local cash, and ID is everything you need for most days. Leave the full wallet at the hotel. Take only what the day requires.

The goal isn't to pack as little as possible. The goal is to pack only what makes the trip better - and let go of everything that doesn't.
